Monitoring The IVF Process

The IVF process involves a series of steps designed to increase the chances of conception and pregnancy. It begins with ovarian stimulation, where medications are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, rather than the single egg typically produced in a natural cycle.

At the MOONEY MD Center for Reproductive Care, we use ultrasound technology to observe the growth and development of the follicles (chambers) that contain the eggs during this stage, as well as the thickness and appearance of the uterine lining, all of which are vital for timing the egg retrieval and potential embryo transfer accurately. We also monitor hormone levels frequently through blood testing to ensure the medication dosages are appropriate for each individual.

Patients who live far away from the clinic that will perform their IVF procedure may choose to complete the ovarian stimulation process at our office and then travel to the other clinic for egg retrieval and/or embryo transfer. In these cases, we work closely with your provider to ensure a seamless transition and continuous care.

Egg retrieval is a minor surgical procedure performed under sedation. Using ultrasound guidance, a needle is inserted through the vaginal wall to extract eggs from the follicles. Once retrieved, these eggs are combined with sperm in the lab – this can be from a partner or a donor. The sperm fertilizes the eggs, and the resulting embryos are closely monitored for growth and development.

After several days, one or more embryos are selected for transfer to the uterus. This crucial step is less invasive and does not usually require sedation. The goal is for the embryo to implant into the uterine lining, resulting in pregnancy. Additional embryos may be frozen and stored for future use.

Throughout the entire IVF process, our team at MOONEY MD Center for Reproductive Care is dedicated to providing individualized care and support. We understand that this journey can be stressful and emotional, and we strive to make it as comfortable and successful as possible for each patient.
