Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) at Mooney MD Center for Reproductive Care offers a thoughtfully structured, lower-intervention fertility treatment that can be paired with timed intercourse, ovulation induction, or natural cycles. The goal is simple: bring a high-quality sperm sample closer to the egg at precisely the right time.

Your IUI cycle begins with a detailed review of your history and previous testing. When indicated, we coordinate ovulation induction medications and follicle monitoring ultrasound, so we can track egg development and endometrial lining with precision. This timing allows us to schedule insemination when the chance of fertilization is highest and helps avoid unnecessary or mistimed cycles.

On the day of the procedure, the sperm sample is prepared in our on-site laboratory to concentrate motile sperm and remove debris or substances that might cause cramping. The IUI itself is typically quick and feels similar to a Pap test for most patients. Using a thin, flexible catheter, we place the prepared sperm directly into the uterus, shortening the distance to the fallopian tubes where fertilization occurs naturally.

Throughout the process, we explain each step, review expected side effects, and outline what to watch for after the procedure. For couples already followed by an outside fertility center, we can coordinate IUI timing and monitoring in alignment with their recommendations.

After the insemination, we advise on activity, medications, and follow-up testing, including when to take a pregnancy test or return for blood work. If pregnancy is not achieved, we carefully review the cycle data together and discuss whether repeating IUI, adjusting stimulation, performing additional testing (such as HSG or semen analysis), or moving toward IVF is the most reasonable next step.
